Pvt. Gibbs was killed in action on 12-28-1942 while serving as a Rifleman on the Island of Tulagi in the South Pacific. Pvt. Gibbs was 15.

Pvt. Gibbs is the son of Mrs. Rachel E. {Binegar} Gibbs of 1111 Meyer Ave. in Peoria, Illinois, and his father, Mr. Orin Jackson Gibbs is in Detroit, Michigan, working as a Roofer. Pvt. Gibbs was in the Marine Corps, and trained at Camp Elliott, San Diego, California, and was out of the country by December 15, 1941.
He leave two brothers, Orville Gibbs in Detroit, Michigan, and Walter at home.

The regiment was reactivated 1 February 1941, at San Diego, California, as part of the 2nd Marine Division.
Under the command of Colonel John M. Arthur, it deployed to Koro Island on 25 July 1942, in time for the final rehearsal for the Guadalcanal landing. Although its mission was one of division reserve, elements of the regiment landed on Florida Island on 7 August 1942, prior to the main assault on Guadalcanal, to support the Tulagi landing. Other elements landed on Gavutu and Tanambogo, to reinforce units engaged in clearing operations. Two infantry battalions of the regiment landed on Tulagi on 9 August and secured the small islands in the area
