Marvin W. Takala of Ontonagon died March 31, 2010 in Hancock. He was born April 19, 1925 in Ontonagon, son of the late John & Katrina Takala. Marvin attended the Ontonagon Schools, graduating in 1943.
Following graduation, Mavin entered the US Navy at Great Lakes, Ill. He was stationed at the Navy base in Gulfport, Miss. Marv also served as a gunner on the U.S. Cincinnati in the Atlantic & Caribbean area until his discharge in 1946.
On Nov. 11, 1943, Marvin married his classmate Marjorie Alice Daniels in Ontonagon. To this union, a son Gerald, was born in Gulfport, Miss. and a daughter, Julienne, in Ontonagon.
After his Naval discharge, he was employed at Muskatt's Dept. Store in Ontonagon for several years. Later, Marvin operated the Mobile & Sinclair gas stations & was also employed at the First National Bank as a cashier. He finished his career with the Ontonagon Co. Equialization Dept. serving for 18 and a half years as a certified assessor. He retired in 1991.
Marvin was a member of St. Paul's Lutehran Church in Ontonagon & served as Congregational President, Elder & Treasurer for a number of years. He also served on the Ontonagon Village Council & the Board of Trustees for the Ontonagon Memorial Hosp. Marvin was member of VFW Post 5600 & the former VFW Drum & Bugle Corp.
He was an avid fisherman & proud of his walleye catches. He was known for his late night fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Waino, Oliver, Kaino & Ted and his sisters Dagmar, Elvie, Lillian & Viola.
Marvin is survived by his wife, Marjorie, children; Dr. Gerald (Molly Lee) Takala & Julienne Takala, grandchildren, Michael & Jonathan Takala, great-grandchildren, Nicolas & Morrigan & numerous nieces & nephews.
Funeral services held Saturday Apr. 3, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ontonagon, Pastor Neider officiating.
Burial in the Riverside Cemetery in Ontonagon with military rites performed by the Ontonagon Co. Veteran's Assoc.
