Master Chief Gunner's Mate Henry M. Smith, USCG (Ret) was a resident of Gulfport, Mississippi until 1939 when he enlisted in the U. S. Coast Guard. He married Lucille F Cottingham on 13 April 1941. Through his career he served in WW II, the Korean War, and Vietnam War. He retired after 26 years in 1965 as a Master Chief Petty Officer. He had served as the first Master Chief Gunner in the U. S. Coast Guard.
