FAIRHAVEN -- George Moody Axtell, 85, of Fairhaven died early Wednesday morning, Jan. 20, 1999, at Our Lady's Have Nursing Home in Fairhaven. He was the husband of Thelma (Swift) Axtell, celebrating 59 years of marriage in September of 1998.
Born in Rich Hill, Mo., the son of the late Carson A. and Laura (Wheeler) Axtell, he moved to Fairhaven as a small boy and lived there for the rest of his life.
A member of the First Congregational Church of Fairhaven, he was also a member of the George Taber Masonic Lodge, receiving his 50 Year Pin in 1998.
He was a graduate of Fairhaven High School and of the former New Bedford Textile School, a predecessor of UMass Dartmouth.
A chemist and packaging supervisor at Revere Copper and Brass Company in New Bedford for 42 years, he retired in 1976.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cynthia H. Haines of Fairhaven; a son, Robert Moody Axtell of Alpharetta, Ga.; a brother, Donald Axtell of Leesburg, Fla.; four grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Dr. Hazel Axtell, Evangeline Goss, Glady Brooks, Charles and Vincent Axtell.
Arrangements are with the Donaghy Funeral Home, 465 County St., New Bedford.
