Melvin was born in Wisconsin to Layton Andrews and Hazel Simpson and moved to Tacoma at a very young age. He lived in Tacoma until he graduated from High School at which time he went into the Navy and served as S1 in World War II, leaving his childhood sweetheart, Margaret Jackson behind. He married Lucille and adopted a son Ricky. He later divorced and married his childhood Sweetheart Margaret Jensen (Jackson) in 1962 in Tacoma. They had his only child Melodee Ann 1963. They moved to Port Townsend for a year and owned the Admiralty Cafe. After one year they moved back to Tacoma as they did not make it in the restaurant business. Mel worked at road construction for J.D. Shotwell and Holroyd Companies until his death.
He is survived by his wife at home, his daughter Melodee and son Ricky, stepchildren Rosalie and Dale Jensen, his father Layton and mother and step father Hazel and Lloyd Stevens, two brothers, Chester and Edwin and his wife, a sister Marvel and her husband and many nieces and nephews.
He was a very kind and loving man. He enjoyed taking Sunday drives with the family. His daughter was his sweetheart.
He developed paranoid schizophrenia and took his life with a gunshot to the head. He is greatly missed.
We were told that he is of Native American Heritage but we have not yet identified the link. update: His daughter shows no Native American heritage but we have no male that has been checked.
