He enlisted in the US Army on Oct 23, 1918. After World War I ended on Nov 11, 1918, he was discharged on Dec 9, 1918. He was commissioned 2nd Lt. upon graduation from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Jun 10, 1921. He served with the 24th Infantry Division and the 31st Infantry Division in Manila, Philippine Islands. In 1928, he was promoted to 1st Lt., and served at Ft Eustis, Virginia and Schofield Barracks, Territory of Hawaii. He was promoted to Captain in 1935 and served with the 35th Infantry Division at Ft Warren, Wyoming and Ft Huachuca, Arizona. In 1939, he was promoted to Major and served at Post of El Morro, San Juan, Puerto Rico. In Jun 1941, he joined the 28th Infantry Training Battalion (Anti-Tank) at Camp Croft, South Carolina, serving for a time as Battalion Commander. When Pearl Harbor was attacked on Dec 7, 1941, he was transferred to Ft McClellan, Alabama, before month-end. In early 1942, he was transferred to the European Theater of Operations and stationed near Oxford, England. He was medically retired in May 1943. His medals included the World War I Victory Medal, The American Defense Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

His burial at Arlington National Cemetery was conducted by family friend, BG James Hugh O'Neill , US Army Deputy Chief of Chaplains. Five years earlier, the then Colonel O'Neill was the Chief Chaplain of the US Third Army, commanded by General George S Patton, Jr., and wrote the "Weather Prayer" for him which was later used at the Battle of the Bulge.
