Born on February 8, 1922, in Mt. Wolf, he was the son of the late Edward J. and Esther M. (Dietz) Lieberknecht.
A 1940 graduate of Hellam High School, Mr. Lieberknecht worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for 33 1/2 years.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps and Air Force veteran during World War II and Korea, and was the recipient of a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
Mr. Lieberknecht was a member of the Columbia VFW Post 2435 and was a past commander of the AbelPoff-Leithiser American Legion Post 469.
He played in the Hellam band, was a member of the Riverside Lodge #503 F&AM, where he was a past master, a member of the Harrisburg Consistory, York Gethsemane Commandery, the York Royal Arch Chapter #199, York Council #21, the Zembo Temple, the York Shrine Club, and was a life member of the National Rifle Assoc.
He is survived by a son, Benjamin H. Lieberknecht and his fiancée, Teir Siegfried of York; one granddaughter, Erika Lieberknecht of York; and a brother, Luther G. Lieberknecht of York.
He was preceded in death by a son, Harold E. "Sonny" Lieberknecht, Jr.; two sisters, Anna Rosch and Rachel Druck; and a brother, Robert C. Lieberknecht.
Interment was in Machpelah Cemetery, with military rights conducted by the York County Veterans Honor Guard.
