"The death of Sampson Beaver last week brought to our notice a very unusual bit of family history. He was the last survivor of six brothers and six brother-in-laws who answered to their countrys call and made good soldiers during the Civil War. Their father was Peter Beaver, of German descent who settled in Pennsylvania. He was a remarkably tall man, measuring nearly seven feet. Their sons were Peter Beaver who served in the Mexican war and as color sergeant in the 36th Wisconsin, Thomas Beaver, 2nd Wisconsin, Sampson Beaver gun Corporal with the 6th Wisconsin Light Artillery and was also designated as a "Grand Army of the Republic Flag Holder", Henry, John and Frederick Beaver, 23rd Wisconsin, and the brother-in-laws were: Hamilton Wells, 2nd Illinois Cavalry, Henry Wells, 26th Wisconsin, Byron Crall, 36th Wisconsin, John Slauter, 36 Wisconsin, Allen Thomas, 23rd Wisconsin, Robert and Ervin Swanger, 23rd Wisconsin. Thomas Beaver was killed early in war. Henry Wells and John Slauter died in March 1864 from the measels contracted while in camp, and all the rest returned from the war safely. Sampson Beaver was born in Pennsylvania, Feb 2nd 1837 and died in Reedsburg hosptial March 15th, 1917, aged 80 years, 1 month and 13 days. When a child his parents moved to Wisconsin where he has since made his home".
