Son of Chief Justice Kensey Johns III and Ann Van Dyke Johns. Graduated from Princeton College and was ordained as a Bishop, and later as a Priest of the Episcopal Church.

During the Civil War he would ride through the battlefields, talking, preaching, and baptizing the sick and wounded on both sides---to both refugees and soldiers alike. He and his family also became refugees as the U.S. Army occupied the southern bank of the Potomac to protect Washington D.C. But he made a conscious decision not to quit his ministry in spite of the uncertainty of whether they would find shelter or a place for him to serve.

After the war, he became president and professor of theology at the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia.
