May 6, 1861 James enlisted, at Norfolk, Virginia, 6th Virginia Infantry, Company "D" for one year. April 30, 1862 his enlistment was extended to end of the war. August 17, 1862 he went AWOL while in battle at Falling Creek ( outside of Petersburg ). He survived the war and in 1869 he was boarding on Cove St. Norfolk, Virginia. No record of his death.

"Carlon, James E., Born in____,Appointed From Virginia. Third Assistant Engineer,_____, Third Assistant Engineer Provisional Navy, June 2,1864. Served on C.S. Steamers Roanoke, Fredericksburg, Torpedo, and Drewry, James River Squadron, 1864 - 65, Captured April 3, 1865, Richmond, VA.; Paroled."

James was serving as an engineer aboard the British steamship Enchantress on March 20, 1886 when the vessel lost its rudder during a storm off Cape Fear and was wrecked on the Frying Pan Shoals while en-route from Baltimore, Maryland to Havana, Cuba with a cargo of coal. He later died in Wilmington, NC due to injuries sustained during the grounding when the boiler of a donkey engine aboard the steamer exploded badly scalding him and another crewman.
