The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Infantry), [then Major] Robert L. Kriz (ASN: 0-391141), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Headquarters, 2d Battalion, 394th Infantry Regiment, 99th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Germany, on 4 March 1945. On that date, near Ueckrath, Germany, when the enemy launched a vicious counterattack at night, Colonel Kriz fearlessly moved up with the forward elements of his battalion and with utter disregard for his own safety in the face of withering hostile fire, regrouped the faltering men. Inspired by his cool, heroic leadership they repulsed the enemy counterattack and attained their objective. Lieutenant Colonel Kriz's gallant actions and unflinching devotion to duty reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
