Lt. Colonel Dickson was a decorated USMC World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veteran. He was awarded the Bronze Star with V for Valor; the Presidential Unit Citation with bronze service star for second award; Purple Heart medal; Marine Corps. Good Conduct medal; American Defense Service medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with three bronze service stars; World War II Victory medal; Navy Occupation Service medal; China Service medal; National Defense Service medal; Korean Service medal with five bronze service stars, United Nations Service medal; USMC Reserve Service medal; Philippine Liberation medal; and the Korean Presidential Citation medal with one oak leave cluster.
His Bronze Star citation reads:
For meritorious achievement in the performance of services in connection with operations against the enemy during the period 4 April 1951 to 1 January 1952. Major Dickson, while serving as Intelligence Officer of Marine Aircraft Group 12 during the period 4 April to 20 June and again from 6 November to 1 January 1952, was charged with the formulation of policies, preparation of plans, and supervision of all Group activities pertaining to military intelligence. Through his industrious, outstanding leadership, and professional skill, the activities of the Group Intelligence Section were conducted with conspicuous efficiency and effectiveness. Major Dickson, through long hours of meticulous research compiled and published a vast fund of information and intelligence concerning enemy installations, defenses and camouflage in KOREA. This intelligence material which Major Dickson personally disseminated through lectures, briefings and reports aided the pilots within his Group in destroying a great number of important enemy installations. His high degree of professional knowledge and his meticulous attention to detail contributed materially to the success of the combat mission of Marine Aircraft Group 12 by providing the means of rapidly identifying profitable targets while at the same time reducing damage to friendly aircraft to a minimum. His tireless efforts, constant devoiton to duty and continued perseverance under adverse conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
Major Dickson is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
