Martha Jane Ludington, the adopted daughter of David and Sarah (Cook) Humphreys was born at Warsaw, Illinois, along the Mississippi River, on Saturday April 10th 1851 to Ananias and Ellen Mae (Mannus) Ludington. Ananias was born in 1802 in Dutchess County New York. Ellen was born in Ohio. They were married in Franklin County Indiana in 1838. Ananias died in Franklin County Indiana in 1874, Ellen died in Dallas Illinois in the spring of 1856.
Martha and Franklin Sylvester Maxwell were married in Martinsville Illinois in Franklin Sylvester's home (house was on South York Street across from the Advent Church) on Saturday December 25, 1875.After her marriage to Sylvester Maxwell, she moved to Martinsville where Mr. Maxwell was a jeweler. They lived where the Harry Smith home is now located.
She has three children, Mrs. Rella (Maxwell) Matkin of Marshall, Charles Maxwell of south of town (Martinsville) and Mrs. Ollie Towell of south of town (Martinsville). She has 15 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren. She lost one son, Perry Oliver Maxwell in the Sullivan Indiana City Mine explosion in 1925. Her first child Arilla Gertrude was born September 30th 1876 and died January 20th 1877.
Mrs. Maxwell's father and two of her brothers were in the Civil War, she had a son-in-law in the Spanish-American War, two grandsons in World War I, and a grandson will soon be called into World War II. Her two brothers were John Martin Ludington and Allen Bratton Ludington. Her son-in-law who served in the Spanish-American War was George Washington Matkin. Her grandsons in World War I were Sylvester Harvey Maxwell and (in-law Walter Cunningham). Her grandson being called into World War II was Jack Maxwell son of Perry Oliver Maxwell.
