Son of Samuel Hufford Garey and Catherine (Olinger) Garey.
Born in Myersdale, PA. (town unlisted).
Jacob was listed as a 'tinner' according to the 1900 census records. A tinner was basically a metal worker. It was a valuable skill, particularly when he made lamps!
On some family trees I have noticed his middle name is Urias. This is not correct according to my dad Roger Warrick Garey and his sister Nancy Leah Garey Heider( both were grandchildren of Jacob and Minnie).
Additionally-all the photos of Jacob, Minnie,Frank, and Albert on this page-were given to me by my dad(Jacob's grandson, Roger Warrick Garey. On the back of the portrait(2nd photo)Jacob signed it 'Jacob Ulysses Garey'. I have had his handwriting authenticated by my dad and his sister, Nancy Heider. Jacob had beautiful handwriting.
Jacob played baseball and was well over 6 feet tall. His baseball nickname was 'JUG'( his initials.).
Jacob had a hardware store(see picture)and he was an agent for Shinn's lightning rods.
His wife Minnie Vincent died in 1920. During the Great Depression he lost his store and went to live with his son Frank and wife Zorah(Warrick) Garey.
My dad remembers that they gave Jacob his room and my dad had to sleep on a cot in the basement which had a dirt floor. He never forgot this. The experience made him plan his life very carefully-so that he would not end up having to live with relatives.
Around 2 years later -Jacob moved to Yakima Washington and lived with a sister, Clara Belle Garey Bristow until his death.
It is said he stayed in his room reading the Bible from dawn to dusk.
He died 8 months before his son Frank Earl Garey, in 1947.
Jacob's other son Albert Robert Garey was killed by a drunk driver(along with his wife Mary Dolan) in 1932-
Lot owner: Jake U. Garey.
There is no stone for Jacob-however Minnie and Albert both have gravestones.
