Lewis was born in a settlement in Virginia called St. Clair Bottom, now part of Chilhowie. His first name was in honor of his mother's maiden name.
Lewis was a founder of Edinburgh, Indiana. He died during an epidemic in 1828. His wife died three days later. They reportedly left nine living children. Their complete roster of children:
