Sarah Emeline Templeton was the daughter of John H. Templeton and Whitty (Avis Whitaker) Cashion Templeton of Lincoln County, Tennessee(1850 census). The birthplace of her parents was noted as North Carolina.

She was the wife of John Leonard, having married February 5, 1856, in the same county where they made their home. At the 1860 census, they were enumerated with one son, James Leonard.

Sarah later married Ed Ethridge, a farmer. The marriage most likely took place after the Civil War where Ed served the Confederacy in Cruse's Calvary.

By 1870, Sarah Emeline and Ed were enumerated as husband and wife in Lincoln County. Also in the home were Sarah's children:

By the 1880 census, Sarah and Ed had added three of their own children to the household:

1900 census records note that Sarah Emeline was a widow and lived in the home of her daughter, Nancy Ethridge McMahan, son-in-law, William O. McMahan, and their two children, Sarah E. and Porter McMahan.
