Karl was a W.W.I flying ace. He was badly wounded in the trenches and out of service for six months. When he returned he asked to train as a pilot. He was recruited by Manfred Von Richthofen as a member of Jasta 11. He quickly became a flying ace and was awarded the Pour Le Merit on April 26, 1917. Not long after this he wrote an autobiography titled Vom Jaeger zum Flieger (From Soldier to Pilot). Karl was killed in action over Bacelaere-Zandvoode on June 5, 1917. He was shot down by British Aces Lt. Harold Satchell and Lt. Thomas Lewis. He was credited with 30 victories at the time of his death.
