Robert J. Battaly, 66, of White Plains, NY, died on February 10, 2003 at Taylor Care Center, Hawthorne, NY. He was born on January 14, 1937 in Dobbs Ferry, NY to Bruno and Margaret (nee Sweeney) Battaly. Mr. Battaly spent his formative years in Irvington and graduated from Irvington High School in 1955. He received his B.A. and M.A. in history from the State University of New York at Albany. Following graduation he began his teaching career in the White Plains Public School System and held a decorated forty year professorship of American History at Westchester Community College. Mr. Battaly's specialty was in the Civil War and Reconstruction period as well as the American Presidency and the American Constitution. His dynamic, energetic speaking, political humor and class reenactments of the Boston Tea Party were legendary on campus. Robert is survived by his wife of 41 years Gertrude R. (nee Scheu) Battaly of White Plains, NY, one son Robert J. Battaly, Jr. of White Plains, NY, one daughter Heather Dawn Battaly and her husband Clifford Roth of Placentia, CA, one sister Margaret Piedimonte of Tarrytown, NY, one brother Eugene Battaly of Memphis, TN.
He was buried across the street from Westchester Community College where he taught for many years. He was a very funny guy, a great professor and will be fondly remembered for his antics and good cheer. Rest in Peace.
