Reverend Erwin Carlson, age 74, of Barrett, Minnesota, passed away Thursday, December 18, 2003, at Johnson's Homes Plus, rural Barrett.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, December 22, at the Grace Evangelical Free Church, Elbow Lake, with Pastor Don Trulson officiating. Burial was in Union Cemetery, Elbow Lake. Musicians for the service were Cindy Trulson and Tammie Pattison. Becky and Sarah Johnson sang a duet and Gary and Lois Strei also sang duets.

Erwin Lee Carlson was born on February 18, 1929, to Levi and Florence (Hall) Carlson in Maple Plain. He graduated from Mound High School, Augsburg College (Minneapolis) and Trinity Seminary (Chicago). He married Doris Ahlberg on July 1, 1950.

Erwin was a minister for the Evangelical Free Church for over 50 years, serving nine full-time pastorates and 12 interims.

Erwin realized a boyhood dream of learning to fly and never lost his fascination of airplanes. He was an avid bird-watcher and fisherman and was continually in awe of the beauty and wonder of God's creation. He especially enjoyed hiking through the woods, listening to and mimicking each birdcall, smelling the air and identifying the flowers and foliage around him.

He loved to sing and play the guitar. He and Doris often sang together in church, sometimes in the middle of a sermon and always while traveling in the car. Erwin learned to cook in his later years and was especially proud of his enchiladas. He delighted in studying the Bible and in sharing his insight and love of life with those around him.

Erwin is survived by his wife: Doris of Barrett; children: Thomas (Kay) Carlson of Hurst, TX; Cathy McCurdy (Danny) Jacobson of Devils Lake, ND; Joel Carlson of Honolulu, HI; and Jeffrey Carlson of Chicago, IL; grandchildren: Lindsay McCurdy of Devils Lake; Thomas McCurdy of Devils Lake; and Emma Carlson of Hurst, TX; sisters: Claire (Marko) Vlasich; and Verona (Ron) Fratzke; sister-in-law: Margaret Carlson; and his devoted pet: Pepper Alice.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother: Reverend R. Wesley Carlson.

Arrangements are with the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home of Elbow Lake.
