Conquest of Iwo Jima and Okinawa, two of the bloodiest operations in the war against Japan, cost at least eight Custer county men killed, in addition to the injured, a check of casualty reports revealed today.

Fatalities from this section were divided evenly, between Iwo and Okinawa.

Those reported killed in action on Iwo Jima were Sgt. Glen Hackler, son of Mrs. Goldie Hacker of Cowden, formerly of Clinton, who died March 3; Pvt. Ray Wilson, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Wilson, Clinton, killed Feb. 26; and two brothers, Pvt. Howard and Sgt. Floyd A. Klemme, sons of Mrs. Emma Klemme, Clinton. Pvt. Klemme was killed Feb. 22 and his brother on March 3.

All four were members of the marine corps.

Losses from this county on Okinawa, latest completed operation in the Pacific, were Pvt. Ernest H. Conkling, son of Mrs. Bertha Conkling, Thomas, killed May 10; Pvt. Truman S. Delozier, husband of Mrs. Erma Delozier, Thomas, killed May 11; Pfc. Fred Wesley Walker, husband of Mrs. Doris Walker, Butler, killed May 12, and Pfc. Lawrence B. Speer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Speer, Thomas, killed April 28.

Reconquest of the Philippine islands, now drawing to a close on Luzon, has taken the lives of two Custer City men- -Set. Price Harrelson, jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Price Harrelson of Clinton, who filed Feb. 19 in Manila, and Pfc. Leroy H. Jantz, son of Mrs. Katie G. Jantz of Custer City, killed in action on Luzon, June 15.
-----

Floyd was the son of William Monroe and Emma Lee Jelenik Klemme, of Clinton, Washita County, Oklahoma. He graduated from high school in 1936 and was a member of the Church of Christ. Floyd joined the Marines on February 6, 1937 and qualified as a Marine Parachutist on September 19, 1941. He saw wide service, in action, in the Asiatic area and the South Pacific 1941-43, then was stationed on the USS Hunter Liggett and later the USS Rochambeau. Floyd was killed in action on Iwo Jima during WWII, two weeks after his younger brother, Private First Class Howard Klemme, was killed on Iwo Jima. Decorations and awards included the China Service Medal, the American Service Defense Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, a Presidential Unit Citation awarded the First Marine Division for actions against the enemy in the Solomon Islands, and lastly the Order of the Purple Heart and a Silver Star posthumously.

It needs to be noted that William and Emma Klemme had a third son, Lloyd, who was released from the Navy after the deaths of his brothers because he was a sole surving son. He lived in Alaska as an electrician until he disappeared on a hunting trip, never to return. Note: Source of the missing information unknown as there is a headstone for Floyd unless there was no burial with the headstone.
