Daughter of Samuel Yates and Mary E Jones Yates. In 1873 Nancy Yates' family migrated from Greene County, Illinois, to Coal Twp, Vernon County, Missouri, the oldest of five children her siblings included John E., George L., Emma Cordelia, and Edgar Elmer.

Nancy died shortly after her families move to Missouri. The family later relocated within Vernon County to Harrison Twp.

John settled finally in Barton County, Missouri, near Jasper in the Bethel community, Emma and Edgar Elmer both moved with there own families to Yakima, Washington, and George took his family to Perkins County, South Dakota where sometime after 1900 his parents joined him.
