From Ms. Clyde:

"Donald Blakeman Eddy, 89, of Haverford, PA, died Monday afternoon (July 15, 2002) at Bryn Mawr Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Avon, January 25, 1913, the son of Sherman Willard Eddy and Emily Blakeman. He graduated from Cornell University in 1933 and as an undergraduate spent a year at The Sorbonne in Paris, France. He then married Edith Rose Eaton and started a long career with the State Department in Washington, DC.

During his years in the Foreign Service, they lived in Switzerland and Turkey. After retiring from the U.S. Government, he lived in London, England on assignment for the United Nations and later worked in Bangkok, Thailand for the Ford Foundation. Over his lifetime, he visited more than 50 countries. He retired to Bethel, ME 30 years ago.

For most of the 1970s and 1980s, he lived with his wife at Sunset Farm, an idyllic early 19th century home on 20 acres. There, he furthered his interests in gemstones, gardening, and environmental issues, and he continued his travels. He served on the Bethel Planning Board and in the Bethel Historical Society.

In 1989, after his wife Edith passed away, he moved to The Quadrangle, a retirement community in Haverford, PA, where he lived out the rest of his years. In spite of a severe stroke almost a decade ago, he took up sculpting of animals in clay and also continued to take long walks and to travel far afield almost until his last days. He loved nature and supported many environmental causes.

He is remembered by all as a kind and generous man and a true gentleman who was always of good cheer. He is survived by his son, Sherman of Redmond, WA; his daughters, Gretchen of Charlestown, WV, and Andrea of Anchorage, AK; three grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Graveside funeral service and burial will be TODAY, July 19, 4pm in Simsbury Cemetery. Vincent Funeral Home, 880 Hopmeadow St, Simsbury, has charge of arrangements. Published in The Hartford Courant on July 19, 2002."
