Daniel Henry GUNNOE, was born and reared in Wyoming County, and educated in its schools. For a number of years he was a school teacher, and for forty years had been connected with the Pocahontas Coal & Coke Company, as manager of the company's coal lands in Wyoming County. He resided at Oceana, W. Va, but for a long period lived at Crany, and for over forty-three years he served Crany as postmaster. He was appointed by President Grant, and was continued in office by succeeding presidents up to and including President Wilson. The post office department having decided to discontinue the office, Mr. Gunnoe resigned, and thus terminated one of the longest occupancies of the office of postmaster on record.

The following was written by Mary K. Bowman, of Dan Gunnoe, Crany, West Virginia (Her words)

Dan Gunnoe of Crany, W. Va., was long a man of prominence and good influence in Wyoming County. He was a man of education, a great deal of which he acquired by reading after his school days were over, and of wide experience in many fields.

He began life on a mountain farm, and learned farming. He was a land surveyor, a merchant, school teacher, postmaster, and general land agent for the Pocahontas Coal and Coke Company, and in addition, was an active Odd Fellow, Mason, Order of The Eastern Star, and was deeply interested in public affairs, often taking part in them, and was an active member of the Baptist Church.
