Aged 69 yrs. "Early Vital Records of Mass. (Methuen Deaths)"

Robert Safford Hale, in Genealogy of Descendants of Thomas Hale of Watton, England, and of Newbury, Mass. (Albany, N.Y., 1889), lists Benjamin Hale as the 8th child of Richard Hale (1720-__?) and Sarah Gage. This child was born 11 Feb, 1765, seven years earlier than the date implied by the gravestone inscription. That identification conflicts with a bible transcription that gives his birth date as 15 Feb, 1772, and his father's name as Jacob. [I believe that the date, 1772, is correct, but that the father's name, Jacob, is incorrect.

Benjamin Hale's first wife was, according to the SAR application of their son James Webster Hale, Marianna Lovell. Boston marriage records list a marriage of Benjamin Hale and Marianna Spencer on 08 Sep, 1793. Perhaps she is the same person.

Benjamin Hale was a sailmaker. His loft was on Battery March Street in 1800, on the Boston waterfront at that time. His home was a three story frame house across the street. He built the first suit of sails for the USS Constitution, working in the old Granary Building. His own loft was too small for the job. (This per James Webster Hale.)

Later, after the collapse of the US shipping trade in 1807, he took over management of the Eastern Stage House at 45 Ann Street. In 1818 he removed to a small farm he had purchased earlier in Bradford, MA.
