Son of Melvin and Goldena Dickson Smith. A US Army veteran from 1950-1952, he retired from the Oklahoma City Police Department in 1983, following 20 years of dedicated and honorable service. Arthur Lee Smith was born May 17, 1930, in Ponca City, OK and passed away March 11, 2005, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Art graduated from Ponca City High School in June of 1949. He entered the Army Sept. 1950 and was discharged June 1952 after serving in Japan and Korea with Btry C/189th F.A.B.N with the rank of SFC. Art served 20 years with the Oklahoma City Police Dept., working for the Accident Division as an Accident Investigator and ASAP. After retiring in 1983 he worked as security for O.G. & E. for 11 years. Then he worked Contract Labor for O.G. & E. Art loved playing golf with his golfing buddies, Ted Pollock, Larry Newell, Danny Troyer and Ken Uffen. He was very active with Boy Scouts Troop 146. He enjoyed talking to his best friends Bob and Joan Faken of Ponca City every Thursday. Art was preceded in death by his parents Goldena Dickson and Melvin Smith. He is survived by his wife Carol, his son Charles, McKinney, TX; daughter Linda Soper and husband Ric, Edmond, OK; son Terry, Austin, TX; daughters Nancy Stephenson and Vicki Bogardus, OKC, OK; grandchildren Michelle Touche and husband Dinnie; Matt Stephenson, OKC, OK; Richard and Patrick Soper, Edmond, OK, Jessica Bogardus of OKC and great grandchildren. Other survivors include his sister Charline Lane, Ponca City, OK; and brother Don Smith and wife Mary, Monterey, CA. Art was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed. We would like to thank Vista Care for their support to Art and his family, and the wonderful nurses Becky Jack, Linda Shadrick, and Vicki Bogardus. Funeral Services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, March 15 at the Bill Merritt Memorial Chapel with interment to follow at Rose Hill Burial Park.
