Russell "Dean" Jurgens, 79, died Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Vinton Lutheran Home in Vinton following an extended illness.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone with Rev. Dr. James Eggert officiating. Interment will be held at the Keystone Cemetery with Graveside Military Rites conducted by Merkel-Bockholt American Legion Post #107 of Keystone. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Keystone from 4 to 8 PM on Tuesday. A memorial Fund has been established.
Russell Dean Jurgens was born October 21, 1929 at Van Horne to John P. and Nannie (Klappholz) Jurgens and graduated from the Keystone High School in 1947. During the Korean Conflict he served his nation in the US Army. A member of Merkel-Bockholt American Legion Post #107 in Keystone, he served as Post Commander from 1972 to 1973.
"Dean" was also a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone and the Keystone Turners. From the late 1960's to 1981 he served as Mayor of Keystone. Prior to his retirement in 1995 he was a meat cutter at Allers & Sons Grocery in Keystone.
On August 15, 1954 he was united in marriage to Shirley Lund at Keystone. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his daughters, Chris (Marty) Junge of Van Horne, Lori (Darwin) Meyer of Van Horne, and Tracy Jurgens of Keystone; his sons, Rick Jurgens and Dave (Kellee) Jurgens of Van Horne; twenty-two grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Lorna Allers of Keystone; and his sister-in-law, Helen Jurgens of Keystone.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Kenneth, Art, and John, Jr.; and his sister, Dorothy.
