Martha Elizabeth Irwin, the daughter of Daniel Walter and Nancy Catheryn Thornton Irwin, was born April 5th, 1874 in Peoria, Ill. She came to Madison with her parents when she was three years old and had been a resident of the community since that time. She was married to Jack Thomas in 1894, and he died in 1905. She was married to Augustus Johnson, June 8th, 1914, and for many years they operated a café in Madison. She was preceded in death by her husband, who died April 19th, 1966, and by her two daughters, Mae and Eva, and she is survived by two sons, Harry Thomas, Tulsa, Okla., and Loren Thomas, Pewtucket, R.I.;one daughter, two sisters, Mrs. Clarence Groat, Eureka, and Mrs. Jay Bohard, Lemon, Calif, nine grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
