The son of Christian and Hattie Brinkmann, August came to the United States from Germany in 1855 when he was still a toddler.

The Brinkmann family attended Bethlehem Lutheran Church in north St. Louis, Missouri. The church was established in 1849 and was located in north St. Louis. August and his parents eventually settled in Calhoun County, Illinois.

August married Matilda Hattemer on 05 Apr 1875 in Calhoun County. He was a farmer, and they were the parents of 11 children.

[Side note: Several of the children changed the spelling of the surname to Brinkman.)

At the time of his death, August was 46 years, 2 months and 2 days old. He was survived by his wife, Matilda, who passed away in 1920.

Children: 9 daughters, 2 sons.
