James was the oldest child of Joseph A. "Tobe" Tribble and Mary Belle Gilbert. Tobe was a farmer in Ray County, Missouri, but died of smallpox during the Civil War on 13 May 1863 while serving as a sergeant with Company D of the 35th Missouri Volunteers.

Soon after his father's death, James moved to Indian Creek, Calhoun County, Illinois with his mother and 2 young siblings. His mother, Mary, married William Jasper Patterson on 16 Apr 1866. The family eventually moved to Greene County, Illinois.

James married Fannie Greamba on 21 Apr 1881 in Calhoun County, Illinois. When they married, he worked as a school teacher.

The Tribbles moved to Lebanon, Illinois so that James could study law at McKendree College. They moved to Columbus, Kansas but returned to Calhoun County by 1884.

James went back to his work in education, spending a total of 30 years in the profession. He was the principal of the Batchtown public schools for 23 years. James and Fannie were the parents of 4 children.

Fannie passed away in 1901 at the age of 41.

Children from first marriage: 2 sons, 2 daughters.

James married Mrs. Laura M. (nee Harrell) Birkhead on 07 Aug 1902 in Calhoun County, Illinois. She was the widow of Alva Birkhead and was the mother of 1 daughter.

While he was married to Laura, James changed careers and took a job as a cashier at the Bank of Richwood where he worked for 26 years. He also served as a county judge. He was a member of the bar.

Children from second marriage: 1 step-daughter, 1 son, 1 daughter.

James died at the home of his daughter, Mary Jane Franke. At the time of his death, he was 81 years, 7 months and 3 days old.

He was survived by 2 daughters, Maud Maston of Chicago, Illinois, and Mary Jane Franke of Batchtown; and 2 sons, Joe Tribble of Chicago, and Foster Tribble of Batchtown.

In addition to his parents and first wife, James was also preceded in death by his second wife, Laura, in 1924; an infant daughter, Edith; and 1 son, Herbert Tribble.

Funeral services were conducted on 2 p.m. on 10 Mar 1940 at the Batchtown Methodist Church. Rites were performed by the Hardin Masonic Lodge. James was buried next to his first wife and their infant daughter.
