Thomas Boylston Adams, Jr., a grandson of President John Adams and a nephew of President John Quincy Adams, was appointed a Cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1824, and graduated 12th in the Class of 1828 as a Second Lieutenant in the 2d Artillery Brigade. After further artillery training at Ft. Monroe, Va., he served in various Southern garrisons and for two short periods in the Cherokee Nation. In 1834 he was promoted to First Lieutenant; in 1836 he went to Florida with his regiment and fought in the Second Seminole War. He died, of typhoid fever apparently, at Fort Dade at age 28.
