Mary Magdelene Schwartz Kechley was born to immigrant parents, Frederick John Schwartz and Juliana Witzki Schwartz. They immigrated from Marienburg, Germany which is now Poland in 1892 along with their infant daughter, Frieda. Mary's parents settled in Beatrice, Gage County, Nebraska where Mary was born in 1898. In 1906 her sister, Frieda died of consumption at just 14 years old.
Mary married Harold Kechley on August 12, 1921 in Julesburg, Colorado close to where they lived for several years farming in Western Nebraska. They returned to Beatrice, Nebraska where they raised their three daughters, Bernadine, Rosalie and Delores.
