From Limerick, Maine, Elisha was a dry goods dealer and later postmaster of Biddeford. During the Civil War, he had served first with the 27th Maine (1862-1863), and then with the 2nd Maine Cavalry (1863-1865). During the latter enlistment, he was shot during battle in Marianna, Florida, captured, and sent to Andersonville Prison, where he spent 3 months before being paroled.
