Robert L. Baker Jr. Ph.D., P.E., 50, of Greenwell Springs, La., formerly of Mountain Home, died Wednesday, July 16, 2008, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home. A funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church, with Dr. Jim Robinson officiating. Visitation will be noon to 9 p.m. today at Roller Funeral Home, with the family receiving friends 6-8 p.m.

He was born Jan. 25, 1958, in Great Lakes, Ill., to Robert Leon Baker, M.D., and Rebecca Chandler Baker. On June 27, 1987, he married Laura Cay Mattox in Fayetteville.

Dr. Baker was a member of Mountain Home First Christian Church. He received his bachelor's, master's and doctorate degrees from University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. A senior process chemical engineer with Jacob's Engineering, Dr. Baker was active in American Institute of Chemical Engineers and held all its offices. He served as an adjunct professor at Louisiana State University and taught at the former Westark Junior College in Fort Smith while he attended UA. He loved his wife and family and loved animals, especially his three dogs. He also enjoyed flying, woodworking, working outdoors and riding motorcycles. He won state Judo competitions while in college, participated in triathlons and enjoyed scuba diving, traveling, hiking, hunting and fishing.

Dr. Baker was an optimistic, gentle man who was willing to help anyone in need. He survived a plane crash in 1978 and helped save the lives of other passengers.

Survivors are his wife, Laura C. Baker of the home; parents Dr. Robert L. and Rebecca Baker of Mountain Home; a brother, Capt. Bruce Chandler (Susan) Baker, M.D., U.S. Navy of Oceanside, Calif.; three sisters, Rebecca Ann (Bob) Penski of Seattle, Betsy Jean (John) Pepper of Carthage, Texas; and Capt. Brenda Carole Baker, Nurse Corps, U.S. Navy of Annapolis, Md.; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a brother, Jay Milton Baker, M.D.

Interment will be at Mountain Home Cemetery. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church.
