ALICE ESTHER MARTIN
April 6, 1927-June 9, 2010

Former Wood Village resident Alice Esther Martin, 83, died Wednesday, June 9.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 18, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, 520 W. Powell Blvd. Private interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Esther was born April 6, 1927, in Streeter, N.D., to Gottlieb and Christina (Graf) Schmidt, one of 10 children. She grew up on the family farm, where she was accustomed to cooking huge meals to feed her large family and the hired help who worked on the farm.

On Oct. 6, 1945, she married Herbert Martin in Streeter. They moved to the West Coast and lived in Vancouver, Wash., and Sacramento, Calif., before settling in Wood Village in 1952.

Esther was outspoken about her Christian faith and was known to answer her phone calls with, "Praise the Lord, hello." She received her ordination papers from Bethel Fellowship International and preached at various churches, including Troutdale Full Gospel Church.

Esther also loved to sing, sew and cook. She continued to cook huge meals, causing her dining room table to groan under the weight. She cooked a Thanksgiving turkey every year and passed the skill down to her family.

One of Esther's most exciting memories was when she won a Chevy Sprint from The Gresham Outlook in 1986 as part of a contest for the newspaper's 75th anniversary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert; and by her nine brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her son, Tom Martin of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter, Marjorie Collier of Puyallup, Wash.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren, with one on the way.

Remembrances can be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 104 S.W. Clay St., Portland, 97201.
