Sgt. Albert P. Harcek, age 92 of Bancroft, passed away on Wednesday, June 9, 2010 at Memorial Healthcare Center in Owosso. Funeral services will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes - Love Chapel in Bancroft. Pastor Mike McDonald will be officiating with burial to follow in Union Plains Cemetery, Byron. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-8pm and again on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8pm.

Al was born in Owosso on May 31, 1918 to Stephen and Pavlina (Mekys) Harcek. He married Lucile Frye of Bancroft on June 20, 1942 and together raised 3 daughters. Mrs. Harcek died on June 11, 2009. Al worked at Montgomery Wards and General Motors before entering the U.S. Marine Corps on September 9, 1942. He served at Guadacanal; engaged in combat in Bougainville, Guam, and was wounded in Iwo Jima. He returned home in October of 1945, after 8 months at Chicago's Great Lakes Hospital. He and his wife owned and operated the Harcek Wallpaper and Paint Store in Bancroft for 35 years. He was on the Bancroft Village Council for 13 years, including 7 years as President. Al was on the Village Fire Department for 29 years, with 26 years as Fire Chief. He was Shiawassee Township Treasurer for 21 years. He was a charter member of both the Mutual Aid Pact of Shiawassee County and of the Bancroft Lions Club. Al was also a member of the Harold R. Cooley #841 Marine Corps League of Owosso and the VFW Reed-Raymond Post 2272 of Durand.

He enjoyed golfing, fishing, and making furniture. Al and Lucile had spent 24 winters in Zephyrhills, FL.

He is survived by his 3 daughters: Charlene Young of Durand, Pauline Smith of Bancroft, Coleen (William) Walters of Bancroft; 8 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Al was preceded in death by his loving wife, Lucile; both parents; 4 sisters and 2 brothers.
