Obituary

Thomas F. Allen, 70, Moberly Junior College janitor-watchman, died at 2 o'clock this morning at his home, 804 Franklin street, 13 days after he received a gunshot wound in resisting a robbery at the college.
Dr. H. C. Griffiths, coroner, said death apparently resulted from a heart condition from which Mr. Allen had suffered for some time. The leg wound inflicted the night of October 15 had healed, and the coroner could not say to what extent the shock of that wound and excitement incident to the robbery might have aggravated the heart ailment.
No inquest is to be held, Dr. Griffiths said.
Mr. Allen was shot, he told officers, when two men wearing handkerchief masks entered the Junior College building as he was taking a shower. The janitor said he sought to jerk the mask off one of the men and that the other fired one shot that missed, then, after Allen had pulled the shower room door shut, another shot was fired through the door, the bullet striking him in the thigh.
The bandits then ordered Allen to dress and acompany them to the College office, where the safe was located. One of the bandits removed his own clothing then and replaced it with a graduation gown, which he wore while smashing open the safe with a sledge, pick and other bars. Allen, in the meantime, was returned to a small room in the building, where he was locked in and required to remain there all night without medical attention for his wound.
The men were in the building nearly all night, the janitor told officers later. The Junior High School vault was robbed the same night, in similar fashion, after the night janitor there had become ill and had gone home.
Allen described the men as small, weighing not over 135 pounds. Officers had been unable to obtain further details from Mr. Allen, since his condition had been serious since the night of the robbery. They have followed several leads without result. The janitor's death today opens the way for a possible murder charge against the robbers if they are ever apprehended.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, a son, John Allen of North Hollywood, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. J. N. Kendall and Miss Zepha Allen, both of North Hollywood, and Mrs. Irene McLeary of San Francisco; and six grandsons, four of whom are in the armed forces.
Mr. Allen was employed in the Wabash shops until 1922 and since that time had been employed as janitor in the Moberly schools.
The body has been taken to the Mahan Funeral Parlors. Funeral arrangements will be made later.
