Youth Dies, Man Badly Hurt In Sherman Crash
Pickup Demolished In Collision With Three Big Trucks
Sherman - A former Ravenna resident now stationed at Fort Hood was killed and a companion critically injured in a pickup truck crash on Highway 75 two miles south of Sherman Wednesday night. Cpl. Joe H. Weaver, 21, driver of the pickup was killed at 9:48 p.m. when his vehicle collided with a truck tractor carrying two other tractors piggyback.
William Henry Winkler, 45, of Ravenna, is in Wilson N. Jones Hospital here in critical condition. He was a passenger in the pickup.
Highway Patrolman Jerry Kyle who investigated the accident said that Weaver's pickup struck the tractor trailer in the side of the fender and the two vehicles ground together with the two piggyback tractors inflecting heavy damage to the pickup as they smashed clear of each other before coming to a stop.
Weaver was thrown to the pavement by the crash which shredded the left front portion of the pickup, twisted the door into a wad, and crushed that corner of the cab.
Wilbur W. Weist of Hunington, Ind. was driving the truck tractor. He was not injured.
Weaver was on leave from Fort Hood and headed north when the accident occurred. The truck tractor was head south.
Weaver's father, Rev. J.E. Weaver formerly pastored a church at Ravenna, but the family has since moved to Perrin, Tex.
His body was at Barrett Funeral Home this morning and scheduled to be shipped overland to Gordon for services tentatively set for Sunday.
Winkler suffered head injuries and had not regained consciousness late this morning.
Weaver was born at Cuthand Feb. 16, 1933 and joined the army Feb. 5, 1953.
He was an employee of Woolworth's in Bonham for two years after graduating from Bonham High School. He was a member of the Methodist church in Perrin.
Survivors include his parents, four brothers, Jerry Weaver in the Navy at Newport, R.I., Edward, Billy, and Bobby Weaver, all of Perrin, and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Jones, Gordon.
