He married Laura Malcolm Williams in Savannah, Georgia. She died in 1892, and is buried in the Williams vault in Savannah, Georgia. Their son, George Vernon Gibbs, died at 16 years old while away at school. He is buried with his mother and shares her headstone.

On February 7, 1833 he married Ana Eduarda Teresa Hernandez, 18 year old daughter of Jose Mariano Hernandez. She died February 7, 1836, on their third wedding anniversary. He was off to the Seminole War. Less than a year later he was discharged with his father-in-law, Brigadier General Hernandez.
He inherited from his uncle, Zephaniah Kingsley, the plantation on Fort George Island, and boat North Carolina. He sold the Fort George plantation on January 30, 1852.
