The son of Martin & Anna Mary (Webb) Ilgenfritz, in 1860 he was living with and/or working for farmer John S. Foust in Springfield Township, York County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 8" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 27, 1864, mustered into federal service there August 29 as a private with Co. E, 207th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

He married Emma Jane Folcomer ca. 1871 and fathered William Lovertus (b. 06/11/69), Charles F. (b. @1871), Hattie A. & Mary O. (b. 02/05/73, d. 02/05/73 and 04/??/73, respectively), Margaret M. (b. 10/13/75), and Edward L. (b. 08/10/80). In 1890, he was living in Glen Rock, York County, where he committed suicide by hanging, leaving a note in his pocket that told his wife "this is no fault of yours" and advising his son Edward to "to be good to your mother."
