LIFE WAS STIRRING ONE ---Civillian Gordon Munson, the old pioneer who died yesterday at the county farm had a unique and varied life, full of excitement and grief, according to his son, Isaac A. Munson, who resides on Sixteenth street. The son was located today, and said that he had not seen his father in ten years, and did not know that he was at the local institution until recently. Munson, according to his son, was 98 years old, having been born in Iowa in 1820. In the spring of 1861 he started west over the old central route. Munson was one of these. He continued into Oregon, and was married in the fall of 1863 in the Grande Ronde valley, where he was engaged as a packer supplying the mines. Two children, Castilla, a daughter residing near Eugene, and Isaac, were born. The mother died 14 years ago, past the age of 90 years and is buried near Goldendale, Isaac Munson said. In the last 50 years Munson had lived in various places over Oregon, following railroad construction and other work, and in the '80s, Mrs. Munson and he were cooks for the steamboats operating in the upper river. At Columbia, Wash., about 1885, Munson fell 60 feet over a rock cliff, and injured his back so that he was bedfast for seven years. He worked in the construction of the O .W.R.&N. road when it was being built east out of Portland. Sometime in the 90s, his son said, Munson was thrown from a buggy near Rickreall, in the Willamette valley, and his hip fractured. Three years after that accident his arm was broken in another fall. He was an Indian war veteran, Isaac Munson said, but records of his service have been lost. In later years Munson's mind was affected. He had been at the county farm for five years.
