John was the fourth of five children, and the youngest son, born to Robert L. and Anna Plencner Cragle. He was raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and Pond Hill, Pennsylvania, and he graduated from Newport High School in 1966 and barber school. He married Charlotte Jones in 1973, and the couple raised three children: Lori, John R., and Scott. He barbered in Shickshinny, Fort Durkee Hotel in Wilkes-Barre, and Pond Hill. For 36 years he worked at Unison Engine Components (formerly King 5th Wheel) of Mountain Top. Years earlier he was employed at Eberhard Faber, St. Regis Paper, and Fulton Lamp.
He died from heart failure while working at home.
