John was born to Lemuel Browning Church and Florence Irene (Mason) Church on March 14, 1942 in Crab Orchard (Garrard County), Kentucky. His large family consisted of three other brothers: Lewis, Chester, and Eddie, and eight sisters: Selena (Tiny), Mary Jo, Rose, Susan Francis, Betty Jean, Aslee, Wynonia, and Eleanor. There was also an infant which did not survive to adulthood. John attended school in Garrard County, then joined the United States Army on April 3, 1964. He served at Fort Hood, Texas, achieving the rank of SP4 and earning an Expert (Rifle)M-14 medal and Good Conduct medal. In April 1966 he was released from active duty, becoming a member of the United States Army Reserves until he was honorably discharged March 31, 1970. John married Darleen Chasteen on June 23, 1967. They had two daughters, Tammy and Tonya. He accepted the Lord into his life as a young man and was a member of Fairview Baptist Church in Rockcastle County. John worked at Parker Seal Co in Berea, Ky. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was the best shot around. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, and friend. John was always willing to help someone in need, and did so frequently. In September of 1984 he suffered a heart attack while at work. Two weeks later, he suffered another heart attack and passed away on September 18, 1984, leaving behind his wife, two daughters, family, and many, many friends to mourn him. He is still greatly missed and much loved.
