Edward H. Matthew. age 82, prominent farmer, former banker and lifetime Republican, died at the family home R.F.D.2, in Richland Township at 7:30 a.m. today, following a heart attack. The body was removed to the Charles H. Nuckols funeral home and will be returned to the family home at noon tomorrow. It will then be taken to the Presbyterian Church at noon Thursday to lie in state until 2 p.m. the hour of the funeral. Services will be in charge of George S. Taggart, minister of the church, and the burial will be in West Maplewood Cemetery.
Surviving are one son, Mark Matthew, cashier, of the Citizens Bank; one daughter, Helen, occupational therapist in a Cleveland, O., sanitarium; four grandchildren, Neil, John, Rachel, and Julia Matthew. Three sisters, Mrs. Mary E. Bronnenberg, Mrs. Victoria Hughel and Mrs Agnes Bickman, of Anderson.
Mr. Matthew was born in the house in which he died, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Matthew, his father being a native of Scotland. The deceased was married to Miss Florence Parrett, of Ohio, who died about twelve years ago. His entire life was spent on the old home place except for eight years when he lived in Anderson.
He became interested in politics early in life and served three terms in the State Legislature at the turn of the century and later served as county commissioner from the middle district. He became a stockholder in the Farmers Trust Company and when it was merged with the Citizens Bank continued as stockholder there for a year.
The deceased was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian church, served in many capacities in the church, and was elder emeritus of the church at the time of his death. He was a member of the Fellowship Lodge of Masons.
