Anton Von Ruden was born in Westphal, Germany, on April 12th, 1832. He crossed the Atlantic to America when nineteen years of age; four years later he was united in marriage to Rosina Meyer at Eagle, Wisconsin.
They took up residence in Vernon County in 1860 upon the farm where the remainder of their lives was spent.
Seven sons and six daughters were born to this union, four of whom have passed to the great beyond.
Death came to release him from this life on Friday, May 10th, just twenty-seven days after the passing away of his companion.
He leaves nine childen, twenty-one grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, one brother, two sisters, and many friends to mourn his demise. The names of the surviving children are: Mrs. Theresa Kroeger, Norwalk; Mrs. Elizabeth Dickson, Westby; John, Cashton; Martin, of Rantoul, Kansas; Bernard and Fred, Westby; Mrs. Bernadene Scott, Winona, Minn.; Mrs. Anna Lins, Philip, S. Dak.; and Anton of Harvey, N. Dakota.
The funeral services were conducted on May 14th at the Pine Hollow church, the Rev. Father Schnitzler officiating. The remains were laid to rest beside those of his wife, in the Pine Hollow Cemetery.
It would seem that for one who attains a ripe old age that there must be moments of deep reflection. Those moments must bring to one's mind either happiness over a life well spent or sorrow and remorse over a life ill spent. We are assused that Mr. Von Ruden, when his mind reverted back upon his long and useful career as a husband, father, neighbor and citizen, it brought happiness to his very soul. And such is the sunset of life to all good and true men.
