OBITUARY:
Ira Blaine Amend, son of Serenus A. and Mary Amend, was the eldest of a family of three children and was born at Stafford, Kans., June 21, 1884. He departed this life at 11:05 o'clock Sunday morning, Feb. 20, 1944, in the Feldhut memorial hospital at Stafford.
He had been in failing health since 1936 and for the past two years had been constantly under physicians' care.
Ira, one of Stafford county's own sons, received his early education at North Star and then entered high school at Stafford.
He was united in marriage to Orpha Clemma Parks of Corso, Mo., Aug. 26, 1903 in St. John, Kans. With the exception of four years in Hutchinson, where he and his wife attended Salt City Business College and where he was in the employ of the Wells Fargo Express Co., his married life was spent on the farm one mile south of the Amend home place.
He was held in high esteem by his relatives, neighbors and friends, who valued his good judgement, integrity and kindness. He loved his home.
Mr. Amend has given freely of his time and efforts for the community and civic enterprise. Among numerous positions of responsibility which he has held was that of county commissioner for eight years, 1923 to 1931.
In his early manhood he united with the First Christian church at Stafford. He was an active member in the Order of the Eastern Star and Masonic bodies of Stafford, also the Consistory and Shrine of Wichita.
Besides his devoted wife, he is survived by two sisters, Nettie Wesley of Hutchinson, Kans., and Odessa Galloway of Tulsa, Okla.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Christian church, conducted by Rev. Carl Packard. He was honored with a Knight Templar escort and members of the Masonic orders attended in groups. Interment was in the Stafford cemetery.

AMENDS TO MISSOURI
Mr. and Mrs. I. B. Amend left Sunday for Excelsior Springs, Mo., where they plan to spend the winter. They expect to remain there until about the first of next March.
"My doctor won't let me work, and says he knows I won't work if I go to Excelsior Springs, so that's where he is sending me", Ira explained. They made the trip by car, just before the gasoline rationing deadline.
