Bessie Lanka, 94, of St. Paul died Tuesday, June 22, 2010, at Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul. Edna was born Dec. 15, 1915, southwest of St. Paul to Frank and Jennie (Matousek) Jares.
Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" Lanka, on May 6, 2001.
Survivors are: son, Gary Lanka of St. Paul; grandsons, Kevin and his wife, Jamie Lanka, of Lincoln; Jason Lanka of Council Bluffs, Iowa; great-grandchildren, Carter, Marshall and Hadley Lanka and a host of friends and relatives.
The family moved to the Cushing area and she attended school there. She graduated from Cushing High School in 1934. She was united into marriage to William "Bill" Lanka on Jan. 20, 1940. To this union one son, Gary was born. The couple lived in St. Paul and Bessie worked at the bakery and Gamble store there. The couple moved to Grand Island in the early 1950's and they bought the 5 Points Laundromat and operated it for 10 years.
Bessie moved to Matelyn Retirement Community in St. Paul on July 7, 2007. Bessie enjoyed gardening, cooking and dancing.
Bessie was also preceded in death by her parent; daughter-in-law, Nancy; brother, Louis Jares; and sister, Lucille Boll.
