Hugh Gaston, the 5th of nine sons born to John & Esther [née Waugh] Gaston, was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania on March 12th 1751*. His parents had emigrated from County Antrim, Ireland a few years before in search of religious freedom. They being Reform Presbyterians and not Catholic.
Hugh's family soon moved south and settled along Fishing Creek in Craven County (later Chester) South Carolina. His father was appointed the Crown's Surveyor and later Justice of the Peace. Hugh's education was primarily done by his mother, who ran a school for local children and their extended relations.
When the American Revolution broke out, Hugh's family were loyal patriots; he serving in the South Carolina Militia under his brother Capt. Wm. Gaston, his 1st cousin & brother-in-law, Capt. John McClure.
On May 14th 1776, Hugh Gaston married Miss Martha McClure, his 1st cousin and daughter of James and Martha [née Gaston] McClure. There would be seven known children born to this union:

Mary (1789-1845)
James Hugh (1792-1869)
Martha (1795-1875)
Margaret (1795-1860)
Hugh and Martha Gaston raised their children in the bounds of Fishing Creek and near his father's home, Cedar Shoals. Residing there until 1825; when they emigrated west to Wilcox County, Alabama. Here they farmed the rich "black" fertile soil on which they built a home.
Hugh Gaston applied for and received a pension for his Revolution service in 1834; an annual allowance of $20.
On the 13th of June 1836, Hugh Gaston departed this life in the 85th year of his age. He was laid to rest in Shell Creek Cemetery; later moved to the present day burial grounds of the Gaston Family at Gastonburg Cemetery; along with his wife, Martha; son, John & his wife, Mary; grandson, David Finis Gaston and his wife, Mary.
