The son of David & Rebecca Clemson (Sample) Agnew, in 1850 he was living with his farming family in McConnellsburg, Fulton County, Pennsylvania, but his whereabouts in 1860 are unknown. He stood 6' 3" tall and had dark hair and light eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lancaster July 14, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg July 17 as a private with Co. C, 195th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company November 4, 1864.

He married Mary E. Ritchie in 1868 and fathered Atchison R. (b. 06/??/67), David K. (b. 06/??/70), Nathaniel Sample (b. 10/31/71), James Chalmers (b. 08/22/76), John Patterson (b. 05/28/79), and Bessie (b. 1882). He lived his post-war years in Franklin County.
