The son of New Jersey-born Seth & Pennsylvania-born Hannah (Young) Ainey and stepson of Harriet (Bennett) Ainey, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Jessup, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg August 16, 1862, overstating his age by an audacious five years, mustered into federal service there September 4 as a private with Co. G, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry (117th Pa), and honorably discharged with his company July 14, 1865.

He married Mary M. Jackson in 1874 and fathered Tracey Hayden (b. 11/01/74), Maurice Jefferson (b. 02/04/83), Walter Jackson (b. 09/30/85), and Cora (b. 10/10/87 - married Jesse D. Scott). By no later than 1883, he was living with his family in Wisconsin, by 1895, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and by 1910, in Tacoma, Pierce County, Washington.
