OLIVER AVERY , died Tuesday, Former Mayor, City Official and Business Man spent most of his life here.
Oliver T. Avery well known local citizen business founder anAlso has d civic official died at the Three Rivers Hospital at 7:20 Tuesday evening following an illness of the past year. His entire life was spent in Three Rivers and vicinity with the exception of one year on the Kansas plains, two years at Goshen, Ind., where he was in partnership in a restraurant and fruit store with his brother Joseph. Oct. 3, 1885 he was united in marriage to Anna F. Meyer and they began housekeeping in Three Rivers. Mrs. Avery preceded him in death in Nov. 1933. At one time he conducted a meat market on Portage avenue for a number of years, later founding the Three Rivers Robe Tannery which he managed until his retirement a few years ago. He was also director and officer of the First National bank for many years. He was actively interested in Republican politics and served the city as councilman, commissioner and mayor many terms. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and took an active part in the fraternal work. During his last term in office as mayor, Mr. Avery had been instrumental in improvements in the local Scidmore Conservation park, had sponsored and opened the first tourist information booth service here and had been a moving and guiding spirit in many civic improvements both during his terms of office and as a private citizen.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Bonnie Armstrong of Three Rivers, Mrs. Mildred Thomas of Fontana, Calif., one son Paul of Kalamazoo and eight grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren , two brothers, William and Ota of Three Rivers, two sisters, Mrs Alice Kline of Kalamazoo and Mrs. Charlotte Balch of Three Rivers. One son Clyde, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held through Balch Chapel , Rev. W.J Malcolm officiating. Internment at Riverside Cemetery.
